No Drinking and Driving at Örebro GK

In deciding the fine, the Board seemed to be making decisions in uncharted waters. According to Hellmark, the Board began discussions at a much higher number. It was possible to impose fines up to 500,000 SEK ( 49,500€ ). However, the Board listened to their attorney, who pointed out that if someone were convicted of drunk driving, in addition to losing their license, there would also be a fine of about 10,000 SEK.
Critics of the decision take the view that a corporate golf outing is really a social event for invited guests only. It is not a competition for amateurs. They believe that there should be exemptions from the current alcohol policy for private events. "In such cases, changes to the policy is nothing for the Disciplinary Committee of Örebro County to decide. We deal with cases only with the regulatory framework that exists today," says Hellmark.
When Hellmark was asked if he thought that corporate golf was a competition, he responded. "Absolutely. It is outlined in the Federation Play and Competition Handbook businesses that golf is to be treated as a contest. The club has the SGF course license and, when you rent the facility for a contest, the club must ensure that all the rules are followed.
Hellmark was asked if the amount of alcohol bore any weight to the decision?
"All reports we receive have to be looked into, but situations are nuanced and they need nuanced judgments. Using your example , a violation occurred. Whether it would have been the same as in the Örebro case or handled differently, I can't answer. What differs in the two situations is that in the Örebro case not only was alcohol at the first tee, but served frequently on the track, plus the signs advertising alcohol.
