Back to the Future in Golf Course Layouts
Friday, 03 September 2010 21:25
Many people have asked why golf courses have eighteen holes? The early golf courses all had different numbers of holes.
St Andrews (Old Course) had 12 holes by 1764, and probably much earlier. The holes were laid out in a line and 10 holes were played twice - once 'out' and once back 'in', making a 'round' of 22 holes. However, in 1764, the golfers decided to combine the first four holes into two, which produced a round of 18 holes, though it was really 10 holes of which 8 were played twice.
Therefore, when Prestwick was built in 1851 with only 12 holes, it did not look out of place. By 1857 however, St Andrews had put second holes in the 8 double greens of the Old Course, creating a proper round of 18 holes, and in 1858 the St Andrews club laid down a round of 18 holes for matches between its own members.
Now However, twelve-hole golf courses are becoming a hot topic, especially after Jack Nicklaus told Golf Digest in 2007, "We should consider the possibility of making 12 holes the standard round. ... Eventually it would be accepted because it makes sense in people's lives."
There are already some fantastic 12-hole golf courses in the world. On Scotland's Isle of Arran, Shiskine Golf and Tennis Club is a 19th century links gem that had 18 holes for a short time until World War II and has kept its current 12-hole route since. Just a few miles north from Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, the mysterious course called Sheep Ranch, designed by Tom Doak, boasts 12 holes that can be played in a variety of different routings.
Shiskine and Sheep Ranch are two of the world's best 12-hole designs, but they're also in the middle of nowhere. The 12-hole concept may work most effectively around larger cities, where land is at a higher premium but golf demand is high, too.
"A nine-hole course works great until you have about 100 golfers per day," noted Doak. "In a big city, you can hit that number pretty quickly."
A 12-hole routing offers more flexibility than nine-hole courses and can get more golfers around with the possibility of two or three starting tees, not just one. Get creative with the tee boxes, such as at Sheep Ranch, and you could easily create 18 different holes out of 12 holes worth of acreage and maintenance -- and keep golfers satisfied knowing the shot values will be as good as any 18-hole course.
Several clubs in Sweden are supporting the idea of golf courses with 12 holes instead of the customary 9 or 18. The latest club to promote this concept is Sommarö Golf at Klarälven outside of Karlstad, Sweden. On August 15th, Sommarro Golf inaugurated three new holes to its existing nine. They have expanded their nine hole course into two six hole courses. The course is located on the ground that was formerly the airport outside of Karlstad.
In a press release, Sommarro owner Lars Järner said, "Golf should be easy and accessible to fit in today's society, and we believe a 12-hole course that you can play in 2 to 2.5 hours is the perfect way to go."
The decision to build the new holes was planned last year when and rough excavation began last fall. In May, they seeded the new holes and now, the holes are ready for play.
Martin Lindén is the Head Professional at Sommarro, and he was asked if he noticed any increase in play? "We had noticed that it was a bit quieter this year, both among members playing and with green fees. We opened the new holes on the 15th, and we were fully booked every night after work, when people have the opportunity to play. The golf course has been extremely busy."
Most importantly says Lindén, has been the feedback on the new set-up. "We have received only positive reviews from the members. We have done the loops so that it is a mixture of old and new holes to create two six hole courses. The members feel that it is almost like a new course, and both the members and our visitors say it feels like you go in a full circle now."
In addition to the new golf course expansion, Sommarro also has a 9 hole course open to all players, regardless of handicap.
Other clubs with twelve hole course layouts are Troxhammar Golf Club outside of Stockholm, Leråkra Golf Club in Blekinge, Oxie in the southern part of Sweden known as Skåne and Åsundsholm in Västergötland, the west-central area of Sweden.

Building on a Swedish Classic

While some Swedish golf clubs, in the current economic and membership crunch, wring their hands, cry "Woe is me!" and cut back on budgets, one club looks to the future.

Rya Golf Club, on the shores of the Öresund that separates Sweden from mainland Europe, will begin a total restoration of its golf course. The first stage has already begun. In about a year, three new holes will be ready for play
.
"We have developed a master plan for the golf course. The plan was well received by our members in a well-attended meeting," says the Club Director, Jörgen Kjellgren. Besides a general upgrading of the golf course, we also will reinforce the benefit that we are close to water."
The seaside character should therefore be emphasized. One way will be reseeding with Red Fescue to border the greens and fairways.
"Eventually, all the greens and bunkers will be rebuilt. The course will be completely renovated.
And to get the best results possible, the Club has looked to the expertise from England, Hawtree, who regularly visit the club in Helsingborg.
In phase one, the utilization of some extra land the club owns to create three new holes designed by Hawtree.
Hawtree, established in 1912, is the world’s longest continuous golf architectural practice. Their work is familiar in Sweden with the designs at Bastad and Ellisefarm.
"Once we have the new holes into service next year, two short holes, #6 and #14 will disappear," continues Kjellgren. "At the same time, #5 will get a new green and hole #7 will get new tee boxes. By doing that, seven will no longer be a blind shot. Instead, it will become an exciting par five-hole."
After a company restructuring five years ago, Rya has worked up to a solid financial situation. The first renovation will cost 2.8 million kronor (almost 300,000 Euro). Subsequent alteration to all the greens and bunkers is estimated to be about 10 million (1.07 million Euro).
"How the funding will be handled, we are still discussing. We have several different options and we are waiting to find which option is better," says Kjellgren, who, despite the extensive process, promises to always have at least nine holes open.
To further strengthen the seaside feeling, Rya has already cut down a lot of trees so that the Öresund is visible from several holes.

Another of Sweden's public courses, located between the cities of Eskilstuna and Strangnas, The Strand Golf, Club is a cut above the usual 18-hole public golf course. Situated on rolling farmland on the shore of Lake Mälaren, its elevated tees, situated in the surrounding forests, give golfers an impressive view over the golf course. The course layout is by the Strand's own PGA Professional, Janne Kjellwall.
The Gården Strand, the area that the former farmland sits on, dates back to the 13th Century and the ground you now play golf on was used by the Swedish kings, Erik (“The Lisp and Lame”) and his wife, Catherine, Charles IX, (Duke Charles), as well as Royal Council Bo Jonson Grip and “Kung Byxlös”, Queen Margaret I.
What sets the Strand apart from the usual public course is the casual, yet sophisticated atmosphere of the hotel, refurbished from a 19th Century barn, and the locally renowned menu served in the rustic ambiance of the natural wood and stone of The Strand Restaurant. The fantastic nature of the Sörfjärdens Nature Reserve makes The Strand Golf, Hotel and Conference Center a place to enjoy, whether you play golf or not.

During the course construction, the course engineer, who is interested in art, amused himself by creating formations made from the natural rock. At The Strand, you can enjoy the golf course, the beautiful scenery and the rock art.

Back in the States, this course would be called a public or municipal golf course. Not nearly as famous as Barsebäck, its neighbor next door, I include it for exactly that reason. This is a friendly course for average players. Not so long in yardage, there is a wee bit of water that demands some thought before your shot. It has a signature hole that is worth a stop on your way to or from Malmö. The par three #4 is an exact replica of the famous island hole at the TPC at Sawgrass in Florida. It’s either on the green or wet there is no in-between. Öresunds is a model place to enjoy a round of golf as it is challenging enough to be interesting, easy enough to enjoy the game as well as your fellow players’ company.
Did You Know?
For me, it’s hard to believe that there is that much demand for eel, but the clubhouse at Öresund was at one time an indoor eel farm. The squiggly snake-like fish were raised in huge vats as a commercial enterprise. That is until a rare lightning storm recreated the battle of Thor and the Midgard Serpent. A bolt of lightning struck the building and electrocuted the vats containing the eels. According to townspeople, it took major environmental cleanup days to eliminate the (literally) cooked eels.

In the early 1960’s, Swedish hockey legend Sven Tumba was invited to a promotional golf contest. Tumba, a hero to sports loving Swedes, had never played golf in his life. The promotion called for celebrities to play a par 3 golf hole. Tumba, swinging a golf club for the first time, parred the hole and that event began his lifelong love affair with golf.
You could say that Tumba’s swing took Swedish golf from a “posh sport” for the elite to where, presently, almost 600,000 Swedes play golf. Tumba, a born entrepreneur, decided that the Stockholm area needed a premier golf course that would be picturesque for it’s members and would be demanding enough for professional golfers to compete on. Without any formal training, Tumba, amazingly, designed and built a golf course on the shores of Lake Ullna. Ullna Golf Club continues to be one of Swedish golf's best golf locations and challenges.

The SAS Invitational that was played at Ullna had Tiger Woods as Captain of the International Team in 1998-2001. In 2004, The HP Open was played at Ullna and the winner was Annika Sörenstam.
