"Easy" Does it At Kallfors
Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:15
For the past year Kallfors Golf, in Järna south of Stockholm, has been working on a concept of "Fun-ner Golf." The goal is to find new ways to make golf more fun. Now the club is launching this new game type, "Easy Golf", which is intended for those who want to play golf in a simpler, faster and more fun way.
"With "Easy Golf" it's not the competitive element in focus, but rather the fun. We believe that more beginners and high handicappers will find it more fun and easier to play golf in this way," says Anna Öqvist, president of Kallfors Golf. Of course, "Easy Golf can't be used at official events or for handicap registration, but that's not the point.
"A Swedish Golf Federation study has found that most golf rounds take too long. "Easy Golf" will appeal to players who want it to play faster and easier," says Öqvist.
"Easy Golf" has a number of "rules" that would not be allowed during tournament play. With the "Easy Golf" way, players always get a "mulligan" on the first tee, which can be compared to the second serve in tennis. When a player hits an errant shot and can't find it, no problem. Drop a new ball at the spot, take the penalty stroke and move on.
Location improvement is always allowed in "Easy Golf". If the ball ends up in the bunker or water hazard the player may drop out with a penalty stroke. On the green players need not remove the flag stick when putting and, gimmies are allowed.
It's a simpler, faster and more fun way to play golf. Kallfors GK will be the first golf club in Sweden, a new form of playing the game, called "Easy Golf", which gives players an "extra shot" to improve the situation and you can putt with the flag in the hole
Swedish golf pundit and television golf commentator, Goran Zachrisson, is very supportive of Kallfors. "It feels like stepping back in time and rediscovering what's important in golf: to have fun. Daily rounds of golf are far too slow, everything needs to speeds up. I think "Easy Golf" is a good thing, in the long run. I also believe it can attract more people to play, when the game is perceived to be not so seriously played. Beginners need to learn in a soft manner. A novice on skis wouldn't go down the steepest slope if he or she had never been on a pair of skis before." says Zachrisson, who has played golf for over 60 years and prefers friendly games with friends.
"We are always giving each other putts and when we have no chance to win the hole, we pick up the ball to pick up the pace. My need to play golf is to have fun and meet friends. Pleasure and happiness are what matters," he says.
Kallfors Golf will introduce "Easy Golf" to its members and green fee guests on Thursday and will continue to work the game into shape throughout the summer.
"Our wish is to let everyone know that Kallfors GK is fully behind playing golf this way," says Öqvist.
Swedish Golf Online fully endorses this way of playing and congratulates Anna on her initiating it at Kallfors. We are social golfers here at SGO, and we just like to get out and enjoy the game. We like to feel good about playing and not the score. I never knew it had a name, but "Easy Golf" is the way I play, generally.
I would take the premise a step further, I like it so much. I would like to see "Easy Golf" become the standard play for every corporate and social scramble event. Maybe it could lower the average 6 hour scramble event into something a little more manageable.
We can hope...
At Sommarro, Leave The Driving to Someone Else
In Sweden, public transport and golf courses are a rare combination. While many bus lines run near golf courses, those stops usually mean a hefty hike to the clubhouse. But to get to the Sommarro Golf course in Karlstad, you can take a city bus and get off steps from the clubhouse door. "It's easy and convenient for the players and good for the environment, as well," says Sommarro Golf's Director, Lars Järner. The Sommarro Golf Club proposed the concept three years ago to Karlstad Bus. The idea was that the bus company would extend route #12 from the city hospital to the golf course, which is located at what used to be the old city airport. Finally, that wish became reality. This week the buses began to roll.
"We have been promoting the idea for the Club's members and guests to be able to ride the bus to the golf course for quite awhile and we are very excited that Karlstad Bus has realized the value of this service,"says Järner.
The "golf coach" runs every 45 minutes each weekday and stops just five yards from the clubhouse. A trip from the main terminal in Karlstad to Sommarö Golf takes only twelve minutes.
- A requirement for public transport to the golf courses is enough that these are relatively close to urban areas, said Järner.
Karlstad Bus will continue the service from now to mid- September when the bus company starts its winter timetable.
"This year's line is a trail, but we believe that the line can become a permanent summer fixture as this is a great way to reduce use of the car in the city. We have added more lockers so members can store their carts and bags at the golf club.
Because Sommarö Golf is a public golf course that is used by groups of friends and hosts corporate events, many people want to eat, drink and socialize after their round. However, because of stringent laws against drinking and driving, a friendly drink at the "19th hole" is not as common in Sweden as in other parts of the golf world.
"We think clubhouse life will get a boost from the fact our members and guests can easily get to and from the golf course by bus now," said Järner.
Österåker Named Golf Club of the Year
Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:15
Thanks to major push to recruit new golfers at schools and at other junior activities, the combined Österåkers Golf Club and Hagby Golf Club was honored by being named the Swedish Golf Club of the Year 2011.
Österåkers Golf Club with its 36 holes and the nine hole Hagby Golf next door have already received a nice uptick in business, though the season is just kicking off. The Golf Club of the Year Award is awarded by the Association of Swedish Golf Journalists and the prize has been around since 1978.
It was the emphasis on the future, junior golfers of all ages, that tipped the scales in the Golf Journalists' assessment. At Hagby, the nine holes are open for play to all schoolchildren during the summer vacation period free of charge. With a vision to provide golf for every caliber of golfer, Hagby is open to everyone, including those who are not associated with any golf club.
"We have two places that are amazing, offering 45 holes of golf at the same location, with an incredible balance between our employees and volunteers. We have found our roles there and that is why we can do a good job," says Claes Grönberg, the CEO and Club Director of Österåkers.
He would like to acknowledge the hard work of the two golf coaches, Peter Michols and Martin Pettersson, in the local municipality as a large part of the reason that business is good. The team is working directly with several schools, with the kid's ages ranging from primary to high school.
Österåker Golf Club, located northeast of Stockholm, is also an experienced tournament organizer and host. Over the years, competitions on the women's European Tour and men's Challenge Tour have been played at the course . Last year, both the European Team Championship and the Match Play Championship were hosted by the club. This year, is one of the events the club is organizing is the Swedish Match Championship.
The addition of the Hagby Golf Club has been a positive for Österåkers GK. Hagby, when it opened, was supposed to be a cash cow, but because of the of the downturn in the golf economy, it did not turn out that way. Now, it is a very good course and Österåkers is investing a lot on recruitment and training there. Members of Österåkers GK are provided an additional member value now. They can play Hagby for free, as well. Hagby Golf opened in 2006. No membership is required to pay and play.
Österåkers Golf Club is making the recruitment of new members a priority through its various activities. "Before, membership was a feature of golf and we did not need to recruit. Now, we need to get aggressive about recruiting, but in a good way. We used to recruit just through getting people to play, but we felt we had to find other ways. You have to almost physically turn the heads of youngsters sitting in front of a computer for them to come out here. That is a huge issue for the future of this sport," said Grönberg.
A new wrinkle at Österåker, being introduced this year, is the option of playing in twelve holes of the 18-hole east loop. Called the East 12 with a price of 2/3 the normal green fee. In addition, there will be a Nike summer camp with at Hagby to complement the summer games. Other programs of cooperation will be presented later this spring.

Snow What!?! Kiruna Hosts Snow Golf Invitational
Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:15
While southern Sweden is opening its golf courses to the 2011 season, Kiruna will be hosting the April 1 to 2, 2011. And that's no April Fool joke.
Kiruna GK opened a groomed four-hole snow course on 29 January. The club's ambition is to stage and host a winter golf World Cup in 2015.
Now the club is preparing a match play event, the Snow Golf Weekend Invitational, to be held this April 1 to 4. All Kiruna golf club members are, of course, invited as well as members of the Swedish Golf Federation, Norrbotten and Västerbotten Golf Districts and some specially invited guests.
Kiruna GK's chairman, Jonny Siikavaara says, "There will be a 12-hole competition for two-person teams where we will play four holes Friday afternoon, four holes on Saturday night and the final four holes on Saturday.
Uhhh, Jonny, night golf?
"We are providing luminous golf balls for the players. We will illuminate the inside of the holes, the flag, the flag stick and we'll mark the fairway boundaries," says Siikavaara.
"I have not tried night golf myself, but those who have are very enthusiastic. It's a different experience."
Siikavaara estimated that 40-60 people will participate in the Snow Golf Weekend Invitational.
"Many of our members enjoy the winter golf idea but there are, of course, some skeptics. There are those who argue that golf should remain a summer sport, " according Siikavaara.
-To them, I usually say that if you can ride roller skis in the summer you could play snögolf in winter.
Kiruna GK usually normal weather to open his career with temporary greens in the middle of May, with regular greens in June.
Improving on the Best
Saturday, 28 January 2012 05:15
The golf season may seem far off when snow covers the golf courses in the Stockholm area and the temperature settles 10-15 degrees below zero. But at Bro Hof Slott, site of the Nordea Scandinavian Open, preparations for the 2011 season are in full swing, so to speak. Bro Hof Slott has been seen as the consensus best golf course in Sweden.
Victory Valley is the closing area that includes holes number 17 and 18. Work is in progress right now to make improvements to the 17th green. Among other things, this winter, Bro Hof has drained the pond of all the water that usually surrounds this island hole.
"We want to make the 17th hole and Victory Valley the golfing world's best finish," said Johan Hagenfeldt, CEO at Bro Hof Slott.
Victory Valley is a natural amphitheater surrounded by small hills that could provide up to 70,000 spectators an unimpaired view of the tee to green action at the 17th and 18th holes.
What happens now is at the short seventeenth hole, which is one of the golf course's best remembered holes, the green is on an island in a lake. In it's original design, by Robert Trent Jones II, the green had a fringe area of 1 to 2 meters that could allow second shots to the green. Now, a wall is being constructed around the entire green area. This way, a ball struck from the tee will not be able to get to the water's edge. Either they are on the green or they are in the water.
"We didn't want a ball that is between the water and the green. The ball should either be on the green or in the water. Nothing in between," said Johan Hagenfeldt.
The work began in late November and will run throughout the winter. When the golf course opens for play next season, everything should be finished.
"There will be a stone wall around the entire island that the green sits. For amateur golfers, there will be a drop zone on the island. The drop area will not be used during the Nordea Scandinavian Masters and other competitive events involving professionals and elite players," said Hagenfeldt.

ISM is the management group that was led by the never-shy-from-the-press, Andrew "Chubby" Chandler, who seemed to have a stranglehold on major winners, with Darren Clarke, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen, along with the world's No. 2-ranked player in Lee Westwood. And, until recently, with no hard feelings apparently, the aforementioned McIlroy.
Caddee is the company that creates course guides for Swedish golf clubs. Now, Cadee CEO, David Hamilton, and his colleagues have launched the newest angle in golf called "Quick Golf."
Play was temporarily suspended today as the skies opened up pouring buckets on the golf course here at Killeen Castle. It will resume as soon as the players are in position, but if they're relying on the weather guys from this morning, I'm not sure.
Although the Norse-landers gave the effort the result was not what they hoped. Morgan Pressel rolled in a birdie putt on 17 to put the americans up for good as the American earned the 1 hole victory.
There were a lot of rulings being made out on the golf course at Killeen Castle in Dunsany, Ireland except for one - slow play. Why some of the best in the world need to take this long to play is the bane of the game. Yet the rulers of golf take it out on the amateur when they scold golfers on playing slow.
