Öppen Golf-How Swedes Play Golf
One Swedish golf term is still (surprisingly) just Swedish. It is the term Öppen Golf, or Open Golf. It was created in 1983 with the intention of making Swedish golfers more competitive in international tournament play.
Previously, Sweden used the same system as elsewhere where amateurs played in amateur tournaments and professionals in professional tournaments, and almost never in the same event. In Sweden, the consensus was that it was not the best way for Swedes to improve. Why not let the best players meet in the same tournament in order to sharpen the competitive edge among the best.
Why Swedes Play The Game

It's not unusual, especially after a particularly bad day on the golf course, that we ask ourselves why we play this dratted game of golf.
But, if you ask the question from a more philosophical perspective, why DO we play golf?
A Swedish research company, mso Golf Research, has recently completed a study of 20,000 golf playing men and women in Sweden. They were asked to give the reasons that they played golf and what benefits they received from the game.
The number one response on the list was "Exercise and Health", which was reported by no less than 76.3 percent of the golfers. "While 76.3% of the polled players said their #1 reason for playing was "Exercise and Health", the answers vary slightly according to age, sex and so on. For example, "Exercise and Health" was higher with women than with men. However, it was hardly mentioned among juniors," says Mats Frisk at mso Golf Reserach.
Second on the list was "Socializing with family and friends". That got a 67.6 percent response. "In that case, it seems to be important for most participants, since the response was similar across all groups," says Frisk.
It was noteworthy that only 27 percent of the participants mentioned the competitive element, thus emphasizing that golf is a very social sport. "There was one interesting observation and it was that the female juniors value competition as much as the men. That surprised us a little bit," says Mats Frisk.
