  • Golfers Seek Healthy Deduction From Courts

As an American transplant, it was surprising to find that golf is not tax deductible in Sweden. In the United States, golf is used often by companies as a business deduction for client contact and corporate marketing. Even individuals can deduct club and association dues, in most circumstances.

In Sweden, corporations can deduct expenses for exercise programs for their employees. Many large companies have extensive gyms for their people, and getting your dues paid at private gym is not uncommon.

However, in Sweden, golf and some other popular sports that lead to longer life and good health, are excluded from the tax deductions. Svensk Golf has put together a pretty good overview of how is golf being ignored by the Swedish government for its health benefits. Swedish Golf Online brings it to you edited in English here.

Researchers, golfers and health care professionals agree. Golf is good for your health. But Swedish politicians have a different view - meaning exercise is still not deductible for businesses.

Leif Olsson retired in June after 50 years with Thermia Heat Pumps in Arvika, Sweden. The 65-year-old Olsson has never had a sick day over those years. Olsson has never cost his insurance company and the Swedish taxpayers a dime. Olsson thanks golf for his good health, a sport he has been faithful to for over 20 years. He plays golf with various friends twice a week during the season, on Thursday and Sunday mornings.

"It is clear that golf is a healthy activity. It moves the body while you concentrate on the game. It's a great workout physically and I stay focused mentally, as well," he told the Swedish magazine, Svensk Golf.

Leif might feel good from golf, but it is not a way to fitness. Not according to Swedish politicians.

From January 1, 1988, a Swedish company could make tax-free deductions for their employees' exercise regimen. There were, however, a few caveats. It had to be a simple physical sport that can be practiced by almost everyone, and sports that require more expensive facilities, equipment and peripherals, and most commonly practiced away from work such as golf, sailing, horseback riding and downhill skiing should not be subject to tax deductions.

It's not just Leif Olsson who believes golf is good for your health. There is scientific evidence that golf is good for health, as well.

The Karolinska Institute, one of Sweden's largest centers for training and research, accounts for 30 percent of the medical training and 40 percent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden. In 2008,  a study was released from the Institute entitled, "Golf, a Game of Life and Death." It stated that golf reduced mortality in Swedish golf players.  The results were published in the research journal, The Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, and it stated that golf is so good for health that golfers live an average of five years longer than non-golfers of all ages.

That golf was not deductible as healthy exercise surprised the researchers behind the study.

"There are few sporting activities which have  better health benefits than the sport of golf. If I were a politician, data like this would make me happy that almost 600,000 Swedes play golf, which is obviously positive for the Swedish people's welfare," said Ulf de Faire, one of the co-authors of the study.

  • Celtic Manor Congratulates Ryder Cup Players

Sir Terry Matthews, the owner of host venue The Celtic Manor Resort, has congratulated the golfers who have won places on, what Sir Terry believes, is the strongest European team ever assembled for The Ryder Cup.

A European side containing eight of the world’s top 20 golfers was finalized on Sunday when Captain Colin Montgomerie added his three wildcard picks to the nine automatic qualifiers that were decided upon completion of the last counting event, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Montgomerie selected Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Edoardo Molinari to join qualifiers Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter, Ross Fisher, Francesco Molinari, Miguel Angel Jiménez and Sweden's Peter Hanson for the match against the United States of America on October 1-3, 2010.

The Chairman of the Celtic Manor Resort, Sir Terry Matthews said: “I congratulate every member of the European team on winning their place in the team. It is a considerable achievement both for those who qualified automatically and for those who were awarded wildcard selections.

In my opinion, this is the strongest European team ever assembled and I look forward to welcoming these very talented players to The Celtic Manor Resort in four weeks’ time. I have no doubt they will meet an equally determined American side and we all anticipate a fantastic week of the finest sporting competition.”

At the start of the season, Montgomerie urged his Ryder Cup contenders to play in this year’s Celtic Manor Wales Open to better acquaint themselves with the Ryder Cup layout and, in Donald and Molinari, he has picked players who shone in that tournament.

Donald finished third on his first appearance at Celtic Manor in June while Molinari was just a shot further back in fourth. With tournament champion Graeme McDowell one of the highest placed team qualifiers after his sensational US Open triumph a fortnight later, and Wales Open runner-up Rhys Davies invited to be part of the team room in a non-playing role, Montgomerie has surrounded himself with golfers who have performed well on The Twenty Ten Course.

Like McDowell, Poulter and Jiménez return to Celtic Manor with fond memories as the Wales Open winners of 2003 and 2005 respectively.

In all, seven of the 12 players who will bid to regain The Ryder Cup from the Americans have played in this year’s Celtic Manor Wales Open and only Westwood and Poulter have yet to play the new Ryder Cup layout in competition.

“I think it’s a definite advantage for Europe to have so many of the team who know the course well,” said Celtic Manor Director of Golf Courses Jim McKenzie. “A good number of them also have the added confidence of having played very well on The Twenty Ten Course.

Although I think US Captain Corey Pavin is right when he says there is nothing tricked up about this golf course, there’s no doubt the more you play The Twenty Ten Course the more you learn about it.”

Pavin adds his four captain’s picks to complete his team next Monday, September 7. They will join automatic qualifiers Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar.

Hanson, Ja! Molinari and Jimenez, Si! for the Ryder Cup

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 22:53

An hour after winning the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Edoardo Molinari was again jumping for joy after learning it had earned him a Ryder Cup wild card.

Molinari was selected as a wild card by European Captain Colin Montgomerie along with Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington to complete the 12 man team.

Swede Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain were able to start celebrating earlier without waiting for Captain Colin Montgomerie's decision an hour later.

They did what they had to do to clinch the final two automatic spots for The Celtic Manor Resort on October 1-3, while Simon Dyson, who began the week hoping that a win would get him into the side, finished sixth.

Hanson, who won last week's Czech Open to leap from 15th on the points table, required top 43 and was 19th, shooting a 72 and said: "It feels great. I was very tired coming here and I've been battling trying not to think about making the team. I think I'm going to celebrate tonight - and tomorrow as well."

Peter will be celebrating his success here in Sweden the next few weeks before he begins training hard for the greatest adventure in his golfing life so far. The Ryder Cup will be played at Celtic Manor in Wales October 1 to 3, 2010.

"I will be competing in the Vivendi Cup in Paris September 23 to 25. It is a smaller event, but I'm going there to recover the tournament feeling. It will be tremendous fun to play in the Ryder Cup, especially after I worked so hard in recent months to earn a place on the team. Right now, I feel great joy and, above all, a huge relief that everything is final," said Hanson.

The 29 year old Italian, whose brother Francesco was already in the team, was two behind Australian Brett Rumford with three holes of the final counting event to play.

He two-putted the long 16th, sank a curling 30-footer at the 194-yard 17th and then hit a chip to within 18 inches of the final hole to add the title to the Barclays Scottish Open he won at Loch Lomond last month.

European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie called it one of the best performances he had seen under pressure in all his 24 years on the European team - and was delighted to announce the first brothers in the match since Bernard and Geoff Hunt in 1963.

Being chosen ahead of the World Number nine ranked Paul Casey and double U.S. Tour winner Justin Rose clearly meant the world to Molinari, who last season won the Challenge Tour.

"I would have been happy a year ago to have enough money to keep my card by this time," he said.

"Colin told me he was proud of what I had done and I said 'Thank you very much and I can't wait to get to Wales.' It was quite an emotional moment for me because this means I will be playing with my brother and that is something that is almost unreal. Hopefully we can make as many points as we can for the team. I think I had to win to get onto the team because I was up against so many strong players," said Molinari.

In relateing his conversation with the Captain, Edoardo said, "I could tell from the way he said it that if I had finished second then it wouldn't have been good enough. For two brothers to be playing in the Ryder Cup - at that level of sport - is an amazing achievement. I said we wouldn't lose a point, so maybe four halves would do it!"

He and Francesco were Omega Mission Hills World Cup winners last November and, incredibly, they played the final round together both at Loch Lomond and again at the Johnnie Walker on Sunday.

Molinari's latest triumph left him an agonizing one point short of gaining an automatic selection off the world points list, but that did not matter when he was called to see the Captain after his win.

Donald and Harrington was similarly delighted to hear the news as they completed their final rounds of the Barclays Championship where they were competing in America.

"I'm thrilled today to hear I'm a part of the European Ryder Cup Team,” said Donald. “It's been an important goal of mine since I missed out last time because of my surgery. I've worked very hard to be here, and I'm thankful to Colin and his team for believing in me too. It's a very exciting year for our team as we work to bring the Ryder Cup back to Europe and I'm excited that I'm going to be able to play a role in it."

Padraig Harrington, who heard the news of his selection on the sixth hole of his final round when his wife, Caroline, gave him the thumbs up, said: “I am delighted to have been selected as one of Colin's wildcard picks for this year's Ryder Cup matches and hope to reward his faith in me with some strong performances for the European Team. I can’t wait to be part of the team at Celtic Manor and hope that the experience I have gathered in my previous appearances will be of benefit to the team. I'm sure with the help of the amazing atmosphere the crowds will create, it will be a fantastic contest."

Jiménez needed a top nine finish to make sure and was joint third. The Spaniard, who made a late decision to play because he was in danger of being knocked out, could have gone to his nephew's wedding as it turned out.

But the 46 year old, who will win his fourth cap, stated after a level par 72 that included missing a tap-in bogey putt on the 17th: "It means a lot. It's very important to me and I'm glad to be part of the team again."

Hanson made it five rookies in the side along with Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Ross Fisher and Francesco Molinari - and Edoardo Molinari then made it six.

The last time Europe had more was in 1999. Sergio Garcia was one of seven in that defeat and this is the first time he has failed to make the side since.

But he will be there, as Montgomerie also announced that the 30 year old becomes his fourth assistant captain alongside Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke.

Hanson Wins Czech Open - Earns Spot on Ryder Cup

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 22:53

Tough Decisions for Montie This Week

Colin Montgomerie will have to pick three from Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justin Rose when he names his Ryder Cup wild cards on Sunday. That much became certain when Peter Hanson won the Czech Open yesterday.

Hanson is all but assured of his debut. The 32-year-old, who held a four-stroke lead going into the final round, seemed to be crumbling under the pressure when he suffered three successive bogeys from the second and then double-bogeyed the 12th. But a birdie on the 16th drew him level with Dubliner Peter Lawrie and the unheralded Englishman Gary Boyd and despite a 74 he scraped into the three-man shootout.

On the second sudden death hole, an 18-foot birdie putt gave him his second title of the season — and a dream date on October 1. Hanson only secured a sponsors' invite on Monday and was clearly overjoyed.

The Swede's play-off victory in Celadna leapfrogged him above Paul Casey into the top nine who will automatically go forward into the biennial match against America at Celtic Manor in five weeks' time. Casey will now throw himself at Monty's mercy; just like Europe's other three golfing heavyweights.

A brilliant driver with a solid short game, Hanson will not let down Montgomerie. In any normal circumstance he would be delighted to have him on his team. But this is far from a normal situation — and is anything but comfortable for the Europe captain.

There is one qualifying event remaining, but the big-named quartet have all decided to tee it up in the Barclays in New Jersey this week rather than the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Only Rose would have had no chance of playing his way in by right if he had made the trip over.

The upshot from it is that at least one supposed certainty is going to be left disappointed by Montgomerie's announcement.

"You Don't Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows"*

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 22:53

The number of golf members in Sweden continues to decline. There were 504,000 registered golfers in Sweden last year. In 2010 the number was down to 493,000 golfers. Swedish golf now reflects a world wide trend in golf. Worse yet, it could relinquish its place as the second largest golf country in Europe.

For over 100 years, the Swedish Golf Federation had an unbroken string of golf growth in its member clubs. SGF's second measuring of its membership for 2010 shows that there are now 493 000 active golfers in Sweden. Meaning that the number has decreased by 11,000 members compared with the corresponding measurements of the same time last year.

"Of course, it is sad, but not entirely unexpected. We have have seen a negative trend in the last few years and it seems the downward curve has not flattened out yet," said Gunnar Hakansson, the Secretary General of the Swedish Golf Federation.

Some districts go against the grain of the measurement and show plus growth figures. It is probably due, in large part, to a displacement of the green fee members moving.
In past years, the number of rounds played, increased despite a drop in members, but there are negative trends so far this year in rounds played. The number of registered rounds of the GIT has declined by about eight percent.

The Federation offers weather as a likely significant factor.

"We had a very cold and late spring, which meant that the important Easter golf had significant less play than previous years. Add an extremely hot and rainy month of July, our members likely chose other activities. As we engage in an outdoor sport, these type of factors have a very big impact, "said Hakansson.

Which might be an acceptable reason except that historically, June and July are the months when the heaviest rainfalls occur.

The initial indicators for late summer, however, are positive showing a slightly better performance on an annual basis.

Player Changes to Swedish Amateur World Teams

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 22:53

In October, the World Team Championship for Amateurs will be held in Buenos Aires. The Swedish women will defend their gold medal and the men will try to improve on the bronze medal they won for third place. But the Swedish teams will have do accomplish this with a different look to their line-ups.

The Team Championship for Amateurs has been played since 1958 for men and  since 1964 for women. This autumn, Argentina will be hosting October 20 through 23, 2010  for the trophy Espirito Santo Trophy to  determine the Women's World Cup.  On October 28 to 31, the men compete for the Eisenhower Trophy.

In Australia two years ago, Anna Nordqvist, Pernilla Lindberg and Caroline Hedwall won gold at Royal Adelaide. Nordqvist has become a star in the professional women's tour  and has already won a major. Lindberg Has also turned pro, leaving only Barsebäcks Caroline Hedwall remaining from that team. Hedwall will join the professionals right after the World Cup.

Coach Walle Danewid  has decided on Louise Larsson of Karlstad and Camilla Lennarth (Saltsjöbaden) to join with Hedwall to defend the world title.

In 2008, the Swedish men took the Eisenhower bronze medal . The Bro Hof duo of Jesper Kennegård and Henrik Norlander were on that team, but the third member, Pontus Widegren, also from Bro Hof, is currently not on the squad. Instead, coach Danewid has charged Ale GK's Jeff Karlsson, from Göteborg, to the World Cup team.

Karlsson competed in 11 events during his sophomore season at Kennesaw State, winning an event and finishing runner-up in another while posting a total of six top-10 performances. Jeff received an at-large bid to the NCAA Southeast Regional in Alpharetta, Ga., as an individual, where he finished in a tie for eighth to finish as the low individual in the event and end just one stroke shy of a playoff to get into nationals. He recently was the highest ranked amateur in the just played Nordea Scandinavian Masters, just missing the cut by one stroke

The World Team Amateur event is four rounds of 18-hole stroke play in which the two best scores each day count.
